“Who’s ever heard someone say that a game mechanic gives a player a shot of dopamine?” This question started the presentation of Epic Games’ Ben Lewis Evans at this year’s GDC. During his one-hour talk, he dispelled the “neuromyths” about dopamine and provided informations about the psychology behind the reward system in game design.
Evans, who holds a PhD in psychology, also talked about the important role of feedback and UX for effective reward systems. He gave furthermore insights in basic reward principles and the value of progression, control, expectation and social interaction in games. If you haven’t seen the presentation yet, you can find the video below and at the official GDC YouTube channel.
