To cover the costs for the website, Turtle.ninja creator Joost has disabled the content delivery network and launched a Patreon campaign.
Turtle.ninja, a source for more than 4000 high resolution textures and reference images is now free to use. Originally a premium subscription service, its creator Joost decided to provide his work for as many people as possible. To cover the website’s hosting fees, he launched a Patreon campaign.
“The hosting costs for this website are ~$60/month,” he wrote. “Any funds past that mark will allow me to add more textures. I already have a large backlog of textures, reference photos and hdris, but freelancing takes up most of my time.
To minimize the costs, he had to disable the content delivery network. As a result, users in some parst of the world might experienc slower connection speeds. With enough donations, Joost will enable the network again.
To receive more donations, he locked certain sections of the website for premium users only. The amount of this premium content depends on the success of his patreon campaign.
